What are the dates of the program?
The 2024 Summer Workshop will be held from August the 4th to August the 24th on the UCLA Campus. Courses will run August 5-22 with an opening reception on August 4th and a farewell lunch on August 23th. Participants should plan to arrive at UCLA and check in on August 4th and plan to check out and depart on August 24th .
Is this an in-person only event?
Yes. The 2024 Summer Workshop is an in-person only event. We do not offer a hybrid option nor fully remote participation.
I am a faculty member. Can I enroll in this program?
Yes. But please note that the workshop offers a basic to intermediate level introduction to CA and Interactional Linguistics. The summer workshop is intended for faculty and graduate students who do not have professional training in these areas.
I am an undergraduate student. Can I enroll in this program?
No. The summer workshop is intended for faculty and graduate (master’s and PhD) students only.
I am a UCLA student/faculty. Can I enroll in this program?
No. The summer workshop is intended for non-UCLA students and faculty only.
How can I enroll in this program?
The application process for participating in the Summer Workshop opens mid February. Accepted applicants will be contacted in March with information about registration and payment.
When registration opens/closes?
We will begin receiving applications in mid February. We anticipate welcoming accepted participants to pay for registration in late March. One registration is open, students are expected to pay for their registration or indicate that they no longer wish to register. The workshop capacity is 30 participants.
When should I arrive in LA?
Participants should arrive and check in on campus by the afternoon of August the 4th, 2024.
Can I stay in Los Angeles after the workshop?
Staying in the US is contingent on your visa status. All participants must check out from accommodation at UCLA on Saturday, August the 24th. Additional lodging at the UCLA Housing is not possible.
Do I need a visa? If so, how can I process my visa?
Please contact your local US embassy for information about visa requirements and process for securing a visa to enter the US. We cannot provide you with documentation to apply for an F1 or J1 visa for this workshop.
Can I pick and choose which courses to take?
No. All participants must enroll in all four courses.
Where will the courses be held?
The courses will be held in North campus in the Public Policy building which is roughly a 20 minute walk from the accommodations. The accommodations are on a hill. If you have mobility issues that would make this walking difficult, please let us know so that we can work with you to identify a way to accommodate you.
Can I stay at a different accommodation?
No. The registration covers accommodation and tuition as a package.
Can I bring my family along?
Certainly, but please be aware that only enrolled participants can take part in workshop activities and stay in workshop accommodations. If you’re interested in an exception please do contact us.
What are the accommodations like?
Accommodations are located in De Neve Plaza on campus “on the hill”, approximately a 20 minute walk from where the courses are held. These are college dorms with private bathrooms. Single and double rooms are both available until either is full. The workshop is limited to 30 participants. There will be 10 rooms available for single occupancy and 10 for double occupancy. You will choose a preferred option when registering for the workshop. Once one option is full you will be prompted to take the remaining option or withdraw.
Do you provide a certificate?
Yes. After completing the workshop, you will be provided with a letter of certification of enrollment and completion via email.
What other activities can I participate in at UCLA?
We will not formally organize activities. You are encouraged to explore town after workshop hours and during the weekend. There are many places to visit and leisure activities including hikes and going to the beach.
Will I be given office space at UCLA?
You will not be provided with an office. The Young Research Library (YRL) has cubicles and reading areas available to the public which you can use during your time at UCLA. There are also many outdoor spaces all over campus with benches and tables.
I have dietary restrictions. Can I purchase my meals separately?
Breakfast and dinner are included in the registration package. There is no option to opt out, but the dining hall has many choices and dietary restrictions should be able to be accommodated. During classes, lunch can be purchased at one of several campus eateries which have a variety of food options.
